2022 Update and Future Plans
I officially graduated! I unfortunately could not attend my ceremony, but I received the holy paper early December.
In the end, my dissertation was soberly titled The French Military Missions to Japan, 1867-1880 and, though I was not happy with it (my undergrad's was titled Commitment to the Established Order: Tokugawa Loyalism from the Formation of the Roshigumi to the Collapse of the Republic of Ezo was far punchier), I'm nonetheless glad I went for that because it figures on my diploma (//. //)
Regarding the PhD, I did not receive the funding I was hoping for, but I think it is best this way. I wasn't quite prepared last year and I'd much rather have a good time than be stressed or feel inadequate. Now in terms of future plans, it's mostly focussed on Japan. I am currently applying for a Working Holiday Visa with my French passport, but this also means I need to wait for Japan to reopen its borders.
The first half of 2022 is going to be a game of patience I suppose, but it will also (hopefully) allow me to work on a few things I want to do (mostly start gathering sources (working in a bookshop last year helped a lot with this). It will also give me the opportunity to test out the video medium (more to come on that) in collaboration with a friend in Japan.
Regarding this blog, I may finally start posting a few articles related to everything Bakumatsu and anything I am interested in but never found the time to read about (Edo firefighters I'm looking at you).
But for now, I'm going to go back to Constantine Nomikos Vaporis' Voices of Early Modern Japan: Contemporary Accounts of Daily Life During the Age of the Shoguns and clock out.
